Creative Ideation

Coming up with new ideas can seem a bit like magic. But as creative producers, we are masters of the illusion, and there is technique behind the wizardry.

We view creativity as a process of arranging existing information in new ways. We constantly take in stuff from the world around us, including what we see, hear, read, and discuss, and this context shapes our experiences and perspectives. By focusing on bits of this information, we arrange them into thoughts and concepts that combine to create new and original ideas.

It is often implied that the goal is to come up with completely new ideas. However, the raw material that informs these ideas, such as the information we gather from our lived experiences, likely isn’t new. What’s creative is how we find new ways to process, sort, and curate that information.

Our approach to ideation, then, is to intentionally arrange information to create ideas. To help the process along, we develop tools and methods that bring out, focus, and organise information into unique arrangements. We feed our minds the right information by doing research and seeking inspiration to lay the groundwork for the context from which ideas grow. From there, it’s all about grouping, shaping, and arranging thoughts into ideas that effectively communicate concepts.
